I know so many people who get caught up in the bad things that happen to them. Things that for the most part are out of their control. Whether it be an illness, a change in relationship status, or even a troubled childhood it is important to not let those things define you, or for that matter define your future as anything other than full of possibilities. I look at my life and the things that I have encountered, there are things I can control and things I cannot. The things that I can control are what I |
should focus on. What can I do to make the most of the life I have and how can I achieve even greater things? The things I cannot control, such as my cancer, cannot be allowed to bring me down. I need to look at them differently and see what I can learn from that experience. I lost my leg to cancer, that was not anything within my control however, how I have chosen to live my life as a one-legged cancer survivor is. I have learned that I am a strong individual who can achieve anything I set my mind too. I have learned the importance of setting goals and trying to achieve them. Sometimes it is necessary for me to reevaluate my goals and tweak them but that is okay. I do not sit and worry that every ache and pain is cancer nor have I allowed my cancer to jade my personality. "I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become." Everyone deals with their life experiences differently, my hope for you is that you will choose to grow from your experience and that you will make the most of the life you have been given.

Have you ever noticed how the Earth comes back to life from the ground up? Today on my drive to work I had the opportunity to drive through a beautiful wooded area. As the sun shone through the still bare trees it highlighted the bits of green that are peaking out of the brown dried leaves that still cover the ground. This new growth reminded me of the opportunities we have in our lives to grown and bloom. Much like the plants we can experience new growth and we can bloom into even better versions of ourselves. Much like the Earth our new growth needs to start from the bottom and move its way to the top. We need to strengthen our roots and then we can grow into stronger individuals. Wherever you are in your life it is never to late to grow and blossom. Everyone is in a different place and experiencing something different so much like the variety of plant life we will begin to grown at different times and our blossoms may look different. The important thing is that we continue to feed our roots and grow stronger each day. What you do to strengthen those roots may be different. For some, it may be a daily devotional. For others, it may be meditation or daily walks. Whatever it is that you need to do to strengthen those roots I highly encourage you to seek it out. Spring is a great time to commence the transformation to the better, stronger, more amazing you.
Recently, I have been reminded of how overwhelming life can be. Especially when we are in the midst of a crisis. It made me reflect back to when I was ill and how I learned to take everything one day at a time. It is so easy to escalate our thinking to all the "what-if's" that lurk out there in the future. When we do this we can't focus on the tasks that we need to get through the day. As I write this I am remembering those moments when I would let my mind rush ahead and think about all the many things that I was facing that were out of my control. I learned quickly that I had to wipe those thoughts from my mind and take charge of the things I could control in the present. I have said take things one day at a time yet I have been reminded that for many they need to take things one hour at a time, and that is okay too. The important thing to remember is that you are bigger than your struggle and that if you take it one hour or one day at a time you will succeed and you will overcome your crisis. **The song that it linked "One Day at a Time" is a song that I first heard at my Grandma's house. Listening to it today reminded me how lucky I am that I have been blessed with such amazing people throughout my life, especially my family. “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” |
